I continue to be amazed at the things people (especially designers with a flare for all things LED) come up with. If you're a loyal reader - and I certainly hope that you are - you may know that I've featured lots of cool little LED ideas here so far. We've seen LED wallpaper, LED bridal gowns, LED sculptures, LED eggs, LED pillows....the list goes on. And here's yet another extremely hip find to add to the collection: LED carpet. It's true that certain designers have been dabbling in this kind of thing for at least a few years...for instance, designer Ingo Maurer showcased his collection of LED creations in Milan in 2006, which included both LED wallpaper and LED carpet. Check it out here. But as far as an LED floor covering made for public purchase goes, the first ones I've seen are by an ingenious Dutch design firm called Lama Concept. Founders Yvonne Laurysen and Erik Mantel create the carpet by cutting industrial wool felt into strips and sewing them together, adding LEDs intermittently throughout. You can apparently choose your own colors of fabric and LEDs...beautiful!
And for those of you who are more into DIY, check out this simple yet stunning post on Wonderhowto.com, which teaches you how to weave your own LED carpet using knitting yarn and flexible strips of LED lights. It turns out that no matter who you are or what you're income, you can have a glowing (some might even say magical) carpet underneath your feet in practically no time! What are you waiting for?
