So it begins. Burning Man 2012 is well underway, and while it’s usually difficult to find live pictures of this weeklong arts and “radical self reliance” festival held in the desolate Nevada desert, I’ve been able to sniff out a few details.
This year’s Fertility theme is reflected in the giant Man sculpture standing in the center of the Playa. Taking inspiration from ancient Roman architecture and from beehive and/or floral structure, the Man stands on a circular pavilion, looking in a way like the pistil of a giant flower. Participants are encouraged to personify bees, embracing hive culture as they march towards the top of the sculpture. At night, the Man and the pavilion will be lit with RGB LED lights.
And though I’m not in the desert this week, I’m happy to say that many of my compatriots are. (Totally not jealous, I swear.) This year Kamp Krusty has acquired a giant art car in the form of a fish, which is outfitted with LED strips along each arch. The car holds 30 people and is decorated all over with bright aluminum “scales.” In keeping with the fertility theme, the fish will swim across the Playa filled with life: happy campers bursting forth at every stop.
Stay tuned for more updates from Black Rock City this week!
