Although there seems to be some debate about the issue of LED lights and attracting bugs, the general consensus is that except for UV LEDs and LEDs that emit light close to blue and purple wavelengths – which are closer to the UV light spectrum, LEDs attracts almost no insects. This means that off white and warm white LED outdoor fixtures are a safe bet to not draw in bugs, while neutral and cool white as well as colored LEDs may be just as bad as fluorescent and incandescent lights, especially when installed outside.

Why Some LED Outdoor Fixtures Seem to Attract No Bugs

Though scientists are still studying bug behavior to be sure, the accepted logic is that bugs are more able to “see” ultraviolet light than other spectrums of light, and they use it to help them navigate – the sun during the day and the moon at night. This is why bugs are often drawn to incandescent and fluorescent porch lights, which usually emit some UV rays, and why LEDs that don’t emit UV rays have little or no effect on flying insects.
