In October I wrote about the America’s Cup sustainability plan and how eco friendly the America’s Cup event would be. However, it seems that they cannot please everyone. The Sierra Club just filed an appeal against the America’s Cup environmental impact report with specific attention to the giant floating jumbotron scheduled to be placed in San Francisco’s Aquatic Park. The Sierra Club claims the giant screen has the potential to create air and water pollution. Not to mention disturbing the mud at the bottom of the swimming area. Plus it will have a negative impact on the swimmers who frequent the park. Other concerns about the impact of the America’s Cup event have surfaced from the Golden Gate Audubon Society and Waterfront Watch. It just goes to show that no matter how hard you try, you cannot please everyone. That being said, I think it is a good thing that our Bay Area sustainably minded organizations are keeping the America’s Cup sustainability plan in check. We know our environment and its delicate balance more than they would, so it makes sense that we partner with America’s Cup to find ways to limit amount of environmental impact as much as possible.
Don’t get me wrong. I love jumbotrons and think America’s Cup is a great thing. But I am all for working together to limit the environmental impact. I just hope this doesn’t result in eliminating the awesome floating jumbotron.
