Outside Lands Music Festival has been going strong in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco for the last four years. Their dedication to creating a sustainable music festival is evidence that the event is here to stay.
According to a new report published by San Francisco State University, the music festival generated over $60 million for businesses in San Francisco and over $6 million for businesses in the outlying area. Not a bad local economic stimulant. Other notables of the report mention that over 70% of people attending the event live outside of SF, thus bringing in outside money, and the festival created over 650 jobs. All of this economic stimulus is great, but what of the impact of the environment?
Well, an organization called Cleanvibes works the event and helps keep Golden Gate Park trash free. Plus, Outside Lands raised over $1.4 million for San Francisco Parks and Recreation to help restore any damage done by the event and to promote their cause.
So, by promoting art, music and free expression, stimulating the local economy, and taking measures to protect and invest in the environment, the Outside Lands Music Festival successfully focuses on the triple bottom line of social, economic & environmental sustainability.
I see the eco-friendly Bay Area wanting to keep this festival around for a long time. Check out Outside Lands’ sustainability mission for more info.
