New Year’s Eve is upon us and I’m happy to report that once again, Times Square’s iconic ball will feature more than 32,000 waterproof LED lights. A few years ago, the ball drop was exciting, sure. But today, it’s downright mesmerizing, thanks to color changing LEDs, which will dazzle onlookers with an array of vibrant hues when the ball descends at midnight. Philips has been providing LED lights for the ball since 2008, a move that has made the iconic New Year’s Eve celebration 80 percent greener.
As the New Year begins, maybe we can all take a little inspiration from the NYE Ball and resolve to make some green changes in our own lives. According to Philips, if every American household switched to energy-efficient lighting, consumers would reduce 87.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and save $15.8 billion in energy costs. Below is an infographic that details the savings…check it out, and happy New Year, everyone!
