Bay Area Children Learn about Sustainability, Resiliency and Science

Sarah's Science Camp - DIY ScienceBeing sustainable in the San Francisco Bay Area does not just mean recycling better or driving your car less.  Yes, those things are green and good, but we need to teach our children the power of being resilient.  Being resilient means being able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions and being able to leverage limited resources in order to satisfy our needs.  If for some reason all of the power went out in the Bay Area and stayed out for a whole year, how would we survive?  How would we sustain our lives?  These are questions for the future and we should prepare ourselves to be more self-reliant and resilient.

At Sarah’s Science Camp, there are workshops for children (ages 5-15) to take part in Do-It-Yourself Science projects, giving them the tools to create something and learn about science using limited resources.  Science projects help to open up children minds about the possibilities of technology, which encourages lateral thinking and helps them get exposed to a world they will have to shape for the future.  If children are our future, we should be encouraging them to get their hands on as many Do-It-Yourself projects as we can.  Giving them the tools to become resilient and sustain the Bay Area quality of life for generations to come.

If you decide to attend the camp, children will get hands on experience learning about the basics of energy, force, motion, electricity, magnetism, gravity and simple machines.  Do-It-Yourself projects include fiberoptic LEDs, a build-it-yourself tower of leaves, design your own dream vehicle, a motorized circuit and more.

The camp lasts 3 days starting today, December 27th.  You can sign up for any of the days and the costs is $95.  It is held at the Black Pine Circle School on 2016 7th Street, Berkeley or at the Lake Merritt United Methodist Church located on 1255 First Ave, Oakland.  For more information visit the Sarah Science website or call 510-581-3739.
