Elemental LEDs Light Up Saint Mary’s Medical Center!

blue-lights002Saint Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia just got a makeover, thanks to Elemental LEDs. When the hospital asked their landscape design company, Oasis Landscaping, to create a permanaent up lighting installation for the front of the building, Oasis owner Edison Adkins immediately called Elemental LED. “I chose Elemental because I was impressed with their knowledge and willingness to help me and work with me a little bit. I’m a landscaper not a lighting expert, I didn’t know what type fixture would do the job but I knew the look the hospital wanted. Elemental was very good at helping me pick what we needed to get the job done. They sent me demos and let me try out the products until we got it exactly right,” says Adkins.

The product Adkins and Saint Mary’s ended up choosing is our LED Par 64 waterproof spotlight - 30 of them in total! The lights, which turn on and off thanks to dusk-to-dawn sensors, shine beautiful columns of blue light all the way up the face of the building, drawing attention to the hospital from near and far. The lights are being used primarily for aesthetics, but Adkins says that once the installation is permanent, the hospital will be able to change the color of the lights, therefore using them to market different occasions. “They can change the color to pink for breast cancer awareness month, or to University’s colors on game day, ” says Adkins.

The lighting installation will be permanent as of May 2010. “The lights are up now, but we just have to go back and anchor everything in,” says Adkins.

For our part here at Elemental, we’re very pleased with the results and had a blast working with both St. Mary’s and Oasis Landscaping. Thanks to everyone involved! Check out Adkins’ landscaping company, Oasis, here on their website!

Get to Know Our Friends at Cerno

x54_biWhat we can we say; we here at Elemental have pretty amazing friends. Some in particular are the people behind Laguna Beach, CA-based industrial design and lighting manufacturing firm, The Cerno Group. The company’s three founders (one of whom attended the University of Colorado with Elemental LED founder, Max Darling), have developed a well-rounded design company that emphasizes cutting edge technology and the creation of aesthetically pleasing, functionally efficient and structurally perfect furniture and lighting products.

And speaking of Cerno’s products, we are particularly fond of its concrete desk lamp because it features, as you might have guessed, LED lights! The modern lines of this lamp are sleek enough to mesh with almost any home or office design scheme, and with 400 lumens of output, 12 watts of energy use and over 50,000 hours of life, it’s not only a beautiful lighting option, but a smart one as well.

And even as lighting nerds, we can appreciate non-lighting products as well. I’m totally crazy about Cerno’s line of Baltic Birch furniture, for example. The design of this Lentus chair is timeless, yet inventive at the same time. While it looks comfortable enough to sit in, its beautiful sculptural quality could make it the centerpiece of any room! And I love the futuristic appeal of the X-Grow coffee table…what a gorgeous design!

Besides Cerno’s products, the company also specializes in creative solution development in the areas of industrial design, environmental design, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and product development and branding. It seems no matter what your needs or specifications, Cerno can find a way to give you what you’re looking for…maybe it’s time you got to know Cerno!

“Bright” Just Got Brighter

Sometimes, “bright” just isn’t bright enough. I can think of plenty of times when I’ve wanted just a little more light, whether it be when I’m chopping ingredients for a salad in the kitchen, or working on an especially tedious project in the garage. Luckily, here at Elemental LED, we carry just the product for those times when you need to illuminate your life a little more than usual: our High Density 12V Brighter Flexible LED Strip Light. First and foremost, this LED strip lighting offers all of the benefits of our standard Brighter Flexible LED Strip Light. It’s flexible and discreet, so it can fit in almost any nook or cranny, and is perfect for cabinet lighting, cove lighting, interior applications, exhibitions, project lighting, etc. Unlike our standard strip lighting, however, the  High Density LED Strip Light boasts  twice as many high-powered tri-chip LEDs as the standard, so it is four times as bright! While the standard Brighter Flexible LED Strip Light weighs in at 180 lumens per foot, the High Density 12v Brighter Flexible LED Strip Light packs a wallop at 290 lumens of brightness per foot! This means the light is brighter and also can travel further, so it’s great for lighting larger projects over a bigger area. Amazingly, though there are 3 LEDs for every 2 inches of strip lighting on the High Density LED Strip Light, the product uses only 4.4 watts of electricity per foot! Even better, this product is rated to last 50,000 hours, which is the equivalent of leaving the lights on 24 hours a day for 6 years ! This is great news for those of you who need high-powered lighting at a low cost to you and to our planet’s natural resources. So if you thought LEDs couldn’t fulfill your every lighting need, think again! Your prospects just got brighter with the High Density 12v Brighter Flexible LED Strip Light!

Turn Any Vehicle into an LED Machine!

1156_led_bulb1_mediumThere’s been lots in the news lately about how car, motorcycle and plane manufacturers are installing LEDs into all of their new models.  (In fact, I’ve written a couple blogs about it too…) They are the most efficient way to light almost anything, after all. But what if you don’t want to or can’t afford to buy a new vehicle, but want to reap the benefits of LEDs anyway?

Well, you’ve come to the right place. With our 1156 LEd Light Bulb Retrofit, you can install a high powered, energy efficient and low-heat LED into your car, motorcycle or water sport vehicle. It can also be used for landscape and pathway lighting purposes. It’s water resistant and comes with rugged aluminum siding, so it’s perfect for both outdoor and indoor use. Best, of all, the 1156 LED Light Bulb Retrofit fits into any 1156 screw-in fixture, so you can replace many of your old  incandescent or halogen bulbs easily. we all know how frustrating it is when a tail light or headlight goes out on a vehicle. But now short-lived halogen and incandescent bulbs are a thing of the past. This 1156 LED Light Bulb Retrofit will last more than 10 times longer than your other bulbs, and gets only 30 percent as hot as an incandescent bulb and 20 percent as hot as a halogen…imagine the energy savings!

Another cool thing about this product is that it is vibration resistant, so no matter how fast you’re going or no matter how many bumps in the road you may hit, you know your lighting will always hold up and be reliable. But then again, that’s the beauty of LEDs…when it comes to lighting, there’s just no beating them! We’re proud to bring this product to our customers because it provides you with yet another way to incorporate the magic of LEDs into your life. Enjoy!

DIY: Illuminated Signs with LED Light Modules

It doesn’t matter if you’re a business owner trying to do a little DIY marketing, or a homeowner looking for a fun weekend project–the fact is: making your own illuminated sign is the way to go. One of the reasons it’s so easy is that here at Elemental LED, we sell all the parts you’ll need to light your sign up from the inside out, no matter what the size, or where you want to put it. We offer 1 watt LED light modules, 3-bulb light modules and even waterproof LED light modules for those of you who want to make an illuminated sign that’s ready to weather any storm.

The great thing about these LED light modules is that they allow you to install light in a number of different spaces, while powering them all from the same source–it’s so simple! Furthermore, because of their compact size, you can install as many or as few as you want, to attain either a seamless, uninterrupted effect (inside a light box or sign) or a more directional yet inconspicuous effect (to display or draw attention to products on a shelf). Even better, we can offer most of these products in a full range of colors, so no matter what your project calls for, we’ve got it!

So how do you build your own illuminated sign? Believe it or not, you have most of the materials on hand in your own home. Check out this detailed step-by-step guide on Instructables.com. Practically anyone can do it! And remember, when you get to the step that requires light installation, you can get all of your products here at Elemental LED.

Wishlist: LED Replacement Bulb

60w_replacement_led_light_bulb_1_mediumI know it may sound weird to wish for a light bulb this season, but aren’t the holidays all about lights? Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights, after all. And I’m not just wishing for any light bulb, you see. The bulb that I want is quite special, in fact I do believe it’s my new favorite product that we carry! (Though I still hold a special place in my heart for the RGB LED Remote Control Light Bulb, which I raved about in a previous blog.) I love it so much because it’s the first bulb we’ve carried at Elemental that can replace the most common household bulbs out there-screw-in 60 watt incandescent or CFL bulbs. That’s right, our new (actually it’s one of our very newest products) 60 W Replacement LED Light Bulb has an E27 screw-in base, which is the most common base found in homes and offices.

Now, I want you to imagine for a minute how many times over the course of your lifetime you’ve had to change light bulbs. For most people it’s been a lot, ranging into the hundreds of times. With this new replacement LED, however,  you will potentially have changed your last bulb for whatever fixture (ceiling light, lamp or spot light) you choose to put it in. That’s because this astonishing bulb has a life of over 50,000 hours. Imagine all the time and money you’ll save over the years if you switched all the bulbs in your house to our replacement LED!

And it gets even better! Even though the bulb gives off the equivalent of 60 W of light, it only uses 12 W of power! That means that if you switched all of your bulbs to our replacement LED, it would cut your energy bill by three-fourths! So, while this bulb may cost a bit more than regular incandescent or CFL bulbs, it is well worth it in the long run.

In fact, I love this bulb so much, I can’t imagine someone NOT wanting one in his/her stocking…

Light to Match Your Mood at Your Fingertips

rgb_remote_control_led_light_bulb_1_mediumI thought it might be time to take a minute to appreciate one of my favorite Elemental LED products because it’s well, really freakin cool. So without further ado, I’d like to introduce you all to our RGB remote Control LED Light Bulb. For a relatively small piece of technology (the bulb measures 2 inches X 3.3 inches), this product can do so very much, all with the click of a button. Besides harboring 16 lovely colors to choose from (we’re talking red, magenta, orange, yellow, Green, aqua, etc), the bulb can also switch between four brightness levels and four display modes: flash, strobe, fade and smooth.

I know you’re probably thinking, “Well, that’s great and all, but where can I install this bulb? Will it fit into my normal sockets?” The answer is yes! The bulb comes with a standard E27 socket size, so it will fit into most any of your home lighting fixtures. Using the remote control, you can easily switch between colors, modes and brightness levels, and can even turn the light on and off as the mood strikes.

Just think, instead of having to install holiday lights each season, you could just have a couple of these bulbs throughout your home, changing the color to suit the occasion, from red and green for Christmas, blue for Hanukkah, orange for Halloween and red and pink for Valentines day! And of course, for those days when you’re not feeling very festive, you can always resort to the standard white mode. But I wouldn’t recommend it. Why not explore all of the options this amazing LED color-changing bulb has to offer? Best of all, it only costs $34.99, including the remote! Holiday gift ideas anyone?

Treasure Island Music Fest Leads the Way with LEDs

San Francisco’s Treasure Island Music Festival is only in its third year, but judging by the event’s production, you might think it has been around for a lot longer. First of all, the line up is a mix of big names and high-quality underground acts (usually in the electronic or indie rock categories). This year featured groups like MGMT, The Flaming Lips, MSTRKRFT, Grizzly Bear, LTJ Bukem, and many more. However, this ~15,000-person festival maintains the feel of a smaller event by building only two stages, which alternate back and forth without overlapping shows. This means that you’ll never have to miss an act, and you can bounce from one stage to the other to get your fill of your favorite artist or to hear something new without the fear of missing out on another act.

And while you’re watching a show, you’ll notice, as I did, that the stage is catching your eye in more ways than one. Not only do the rock stars up front offer some enticing aesthetic appeal, but so do the visuals depicted behind the band, thanks to the production team’s liberal use of LED lights. Instead of using a projection screen for visuals on stage as many festivals do, the Treasure Island main stage was decked out with a 3-foot X 30’-foot rectangle that was composed entirely of small LED lights. Each LED acted like a pixel, making up a portion of the whole “grid.” From a distance, the LEDs all blurred together to create one rectangular screen upon which an image was displayed. Even better, this screen was framed by a 40-foot long and 10-foot wide rainbow of LED light bars, which displayed the outer edges of the image-spayed out in a rainbow shape- that was being shown on the rectangular grid below. The effect was mesmerizing and the colors displayed were more vivid than anything that could have been done using projection. And, it’s always nice to remember that the LED’s helped the festival stay green, contributing to the reduction of its carbon footprint right along with its ride-share and recycling programs.

Music festivals are always a good time, but attention to the smaller details help make them GREAT experiences. Treasure Island certainly hit that mark, and it couldn’t have done it without the help of LED technology.

The Ever-Expanding LED Market

We’ve all heard of the Green Revolution-even during the current economic crisis, all things “green” still seem to be a safe place to invest your, well, green. A key indicator of this trend is the way the government reacts to and becomes involved in it, and recent news reveals that government organizations are more on board than ever. In May, the Department of Energy set aside $786.5 million of Recovery Act funds, allocating them for new and existing projects in “bio-refineries, sustainability research, infrastructure-compatible biofuels and ethanol research.” The government has also awarded $2.3 billion in tax credits to businesses who specialize in clean-tech equipment manufacturing.

And as if that’s not enough, the LED market is purportedly on the rise in a big way. In September, Business Week reported that while the LED market is currently a small portion of the lighting industry, it is anticipated to become the fastest-growing sector over the next 10 years. One thing that will help the LED industry grow is the national goal to improve building efficiency by 25-50 percent in the next ten years, according to Business Week.

Evidence of this new trend is popping up all over the country, as well as the world. For instance, new LED lighting technology will be installed in the Elb-Tunnel in Hamburg, Germany. The LEDs will not only help move traffic safely through the tunnel, but will also reduce energy usage and carbon emissions. And PR Newswire just reported that LEDs will completely replace halogen bulbs in the European surgical market by 2014. In fact, European nations are incorporating LEDs more rapidly than the United States.

But, the US is not far behind. Indianapolis, for instance, just joined ranks with other American cities by switching to using LEDs in their traffic signals. Indianapolis received federal stimulus funds to help them make the change, thanks to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program.

It seems that no matter where you look, LEDs are popping up, lighting the way to a brighter, cleaner, safer future.

Elemental LED Makes a Name for Itself at Maker Faire 2009

Elemental LED Makes a Name for Itself at Maker Faire 2009

We are thrilled to announce that Elemental LED’s first tradeshow experience went off without a hitch! Maker Faire 2009, the country’s largest do-it-yourself festival, provided our first opportunity to display, demonstrate and get creative with our products in a public arena. And did we ever! Over the two-day event (May 30—31), our booth was quite the popular place to be. The focus of our installation was interactivity. Everything we had to offer—from our product displays to our workshops—engaged the audience on a participatory level. We ensured that each visitor left with a better understanding of how LEDs can be used to meet his/her individual needs, reduce environmental impact and improve overall quality of life. Check out some of the different aspects of our Maker Faire booth below.

Expertly crafted by our friends at Arcane Solutions, our displays demonstrated the unique energy savings, huge lumen output and adaptability of our products.

Product Displays
Expertly crafted by our friends at Arcane Solutions, our displays demonstrated the unique energy savings, huge lumen output and adaptability of our products. We showed off most of our strip lighting, our waterproof, flexible LEDs, compared brightness, heat and wattage output in one of our LED bulbs to that of a regular incandescent bulb, and used our full color LED wall panels as enticing eye candy.

An especially exciting part of our display was the nearly 2ft X 2ft Elemental LED logo we had fabricated to illustrate the unique customization capabilities of our LEDs. Through this demonstration, viewers learned not only of the versatility of our color changing lights, but also that with the right programming, anyone can manipulate and control our LEDs remotely using a computer and/or iPhone. Choose your own colors, opacity, brightness and/or patterns and control them from your personal handheld device—the possibilities are endless!

Soldering Workshops
In keeping with the theme of Maker Faire, we also wanted to incorporate an activity that allowed festival-goers to make something with their own two hands. We achieved this by holding soldering workshops in which participants learned how to solder components (transistors, voltage regulators, capacitors, etc) to a special Elemental LED circuit board. If done correctly, each person walked away with a working sample of our color-changing flexible LED strip lighting that they built themselves!

Syncomasher
Another important element of our booth was the Syncomasher, an interactive audio instrument created by musician and artist Matt Moldover. The instrument combines five controllers that each represent a unique sonic element, and are all connected to one computer brain. The result is an “electronic drum circle” that’s extremely entertaining for all age groups. Elemental LED lights were used in the Syncomasher to provide visual feedback and aesthetic appeal.

Thank you
Over the course of the weekend, we met hundreds of interesting people, and connected with like-minded companies and organizations. We’re excited about the possibilities and will continue to expand our network and to grow as a company. Elemental LED would like to thank everyone involved in making our experience at Maker Faire a complete success. We hope to see you next year!
