Maker Faire LED Art Highlight: LED Giraffe
Category: LED Art

As if walking through a psychedelic African safari, the Electric Giraffe, Russell is one of the largest LED projects at Maker Faire. Named after his programmer, Russell delightfully speaks the facts in a robotic tone: “Hello, my name is Russell.” “I am the Electric Giraffe.” “Lindsay is my owner.”

Everyone wanted to pet him even if made of metal. The way the spots transitioned from color to color in waves was visually alluring and the glitter lava lamp ears just plain fun. Despite his monotonous voice, Russell was made to party, and party he does from festival to festival.

Lindsay had never made anything like this before but was encouraged by a friend at Burning Man. Watch this video to learn how the whole idea came about and see Russell’s color changing LED lights in full effect. Just goes to show that if you’re willing to learn and put in the work, you can make anything.
