Newtree, a local Marin based sustainable vendor of organic chocolate, opens up its flagship location in the SOMA neighborhood of San Francisco. With a commitment to sustainability, Newtree designed its new chocolate shop and café with recycled and reused materials. Even their floors are made out of reclaimed pebbles.
Newtree has long stood by its values of using organic and fair trade ingredients as they try and tap into the healthier chocolate market. Using ingredients like grape extract, quinoa and flax seed in their dark chocolate, the hope is to attract foodies, green conscious and health conscious customers. Besides having a fully stocked chocolate shop and an on-demand supply of samples, Newtree’s San Francisco location features a café for breakfast and lunch.
The café hosts organic menu options like pastries, sandwiches, soups, salads and other sweet and savory fair.
From a small shop in Marin, to a large shop and café in San Francisco Newtree is riding the wave of the green market shift that is happening in the sustainably minded San Francisco Bay Area. It is this shift that allowed them to grow.
It is great that people are willing to spend money on organic, fair trade chocolate. The more people vote for sustainability with their dollars, the more the market will continue to shift toward the green side. I shall be checking in on Newtree to see how their business survives. It is businesses like these that will be the indicators of how far along the green market has come.
