Head in the clouds? Why not put some of that dreamy, creative energy to good use this weekend by embarking on a simple LEDIY project with a highly ethereal effect: hanging LED cloud lanterns! Thanks to LED lights’ cool temperatures, it’s safe to surround them in paper lanterns and cotton batting, which you’ll need to create a misty look. Here’s how to do it:
Gather the following items
- Cotton Batting
- Paper Lanterns
- Battery Powered LED lights
- Hot Glue Gun
Instructions
1. Pull at the cotton batting until it looks fluffy, light, and cloud-like.
2. Hot glue the batting to the outside of the paper lantern in various places, making sure it’s fluffed to your liking.
3. Place your LED lights inside each lantern.
4. If you’re using small, battery powered LED lights, you can affix them to the internal structure of the lantern and hang it wherever you like.
5. As another option, you could make a chain of several clouds, connecting them with Elemental LED’s RGB 4-In-One LED Puck Light Kit, which would enable you to create color-changing-LED lit clouds remotely controlled with an RGB controller! (This option requires a nearby electrical outlet, however.)

The crafter who created these used a pack that said, “Cleansing Pleats { I’ve also seen this called batting too. }” They looked like neatly folded ‘layers’ of cotton wadding. You need to pull and tease the cotton batting/ pleats apart for it to become cloud like, she says.
I make a bunch of these for Sky VBS and they turned out great and added a lot to my set. Everyone loved them and even the kids said they wanted to take them home for their rooms. Love the idea!
what kind of cotton batting did you use? i tried looking for it but there’s all kinds that come up when trying to order some. my friend and i are planning on making a bunch for a “outdoor” themed room and dont know what kind of the stuff we need

Hmm, changing the light color could lead to some interesting effects. Don’t want glowing clouds? Replace the white LEDs with orange, and dye the cotton dark gray. Now you have explosion lamps. Or, use UV LEDs and some glow-in-the-dark airsoft ammo to make a nebula. Spray on some fluorescent paint in places to make wisps of glowing gas.
maybe you could use a remote controlled LED? Elemental sells some of them (http://www.elementalled.com/rgb-remote-control-led-light-bulb.html) but they are lightbulbs that require a screw in base. OR you could just make sure the battery powered LEDs were accessible based on how you arranged the cloud material.
just curious how’d you kill the led when you want some darkness…if the cloud texture is totally encompassing it..is there any to make this into a functioning on/off lamp lighting for a room?…without having the chord and just batter…

The good thing about LED lights is that they do not get hot! They get a little warm, but not enough to cause a fire hazard. That is one of the major benefits of LED lights! They are so low energy, they emit very little heat.
What is the danger of the heat of the lamp igniting the cotton?
