Today I continue my infatuation with The Principals, a New York-based industrial design team that specializes in interactive environments. Previously this week, I’ve featured two of their most recent creations: Hammertone and Cosmic Quilt. Now I bring you the BotoxLamp, an interactive LED lighting fixture that responds to the movements and proximity of passersby by flickering, igniting and flashing its internal system of dimmable LED lights. The outer structure of BotoxLamp is a sight to behold. Plasma cut aluminum is bent in aggressive angles to create a formidable shell that looks like some kind of bionic crustacean…or maybe even an extraterrestrial battleship.

Illumination from the LED lights seeps through the cracks, creating mesmerizing and haunting shadows on the surrounding walls. “BotoxLamp fluctuates between states of alert presence and rambling unconsciousness, comparable to rumbling thunder and flashes of lightning in the distance,” creator Drew Seskunas told MocoLoco. Indeed, one might be able to imagine Botox Lamp as a miniature thundercloud that got trapped indoors but is unleashing its fury upon the world nonetheless. In reality, Botox Lamp is a prototype for other “Botox” themed installations that came later for The Principals…and yes, we’ll get to those tomorrow.
