If you’ve ever wanted to experience wizardry, look no further than “DJ Light,” an interactive sound and LED lighting installation by Cinimod Studio. Created in Lima, Peru for a Christmas celebration, this immersive environment consists of a high-tech DJ podium and 85 illuminated spheres, each one outfitted with color-changing DMX LED lights. The lights, colors and sounds are controlled by the “DJ,” who stands on the podium beneath a highly sensitive thermal camera, which tracks the movements and gestures of its subject, translating them into a colorful audio-visual display that is depicted out across the globes.
The technology that went into creating this installation is mind-boggling, and Cinimod admits that it took years to develop—with over 400 channels of lighting control and a multi-directional sound system, we can see why. Whether you’re observing the piece in action as an audience member, or actually controlling the system from the DJ stand, the experience must be breathtaking. Without any wires or connected devices, the user can swipe his/her hands this way and that, watching as his/her movements are translated into immediate audio-visual feedback below. I’m not sure where or when Cinimod might install DJ Light again, but when they do, I sure hope to be there! Watch it in action here.
Thanks to Cinimod for the images.
